This year's ESPYs on June 21 will be held virtually, with the two-hour broadcast hosted by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird and U.S. women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Bird and Rapinoe are partners and share a home, easing some of the logistics.
Show producer Jeff Smith told the Associated Press, "We liked the idea of having athletes from diverse sports that represent something for every fanWe're finding ways to make this feel really connected to the audience. They're so ready to reach out to this community." The goal will be to alert award-winners in real time so audiences watching on television can watch their live reaction. "We're finding access to athletes and celebrities that in some way will surprise the audience," Smith said.
