Mitchell Tenpenny recently released his new song titled “Not Today,” sharing the news with fans on X: "“Not Today” is OUT NOW!! I hope y’all love this song as much as I do. I’ve rewritten this song over and over again for the past 10 years and it finally feels like what I wanted from the beginning. 🤘🏻 Cheers to new music." 'Not Today' is the follow-up to Tenpenny's latest releases “Breaking My Heart” and “Bigger Mistake.”
Tenpenny's third studio album, This Is the Heavy, arrived in 2022, featuring the singles “Truth About You” and “Bucket List.” Mitchell wrote “Not Today” with Chris DeStefano, Michael Whitworth, and Claire Douglas, and told Country Now: "I wrote this song called ‘Not Today,’ years ago on a record that I put out before we were ever signed, and I loved it. It was more of a ballad, I love that song but it never hit the way I originally wanted it when I wrote it. So I brought that title back into a couple of guys that I know are more rock-driven and that’s kind of where I wanted it to go.”
The video for “Not Today” was written and directed by Jeff Johnson and filmed in Nashville; it depicts Mitchell sitting in an electric chair after he’s found guilty of a crime, while memories of his life and girlfriend flash through his mind– all in reverse.
