Updated 6/11/19 6:35 a.m.: David "Big Papi" Ortiz arrived in Boston on Monday night from a hospital in the Dominican Republic. Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox president and chief executive officer, said Monday afternoon that the team sent a medical air ambulance to pick up Ortiz and jet him back to Boston to be treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. He said he hoped Ortiz would be back in Boston "sometime later tonight." Ortiz arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital around 9:30 p.m. on Monday night.

Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is out of surgery and doing "fine," according to his family, after he was shot at a club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Ortiz's media assistant, Leo Lopez, said that Ortiz is stable but still in intensive care. "Doctors say he is out of danger, but he is heavily sedated and will be in intensive care for the next 24 hours," Lopez said.  He also said the operation lasted six hours and was performed by three doctors. The team had to remove part of Ortiz's intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder and Ortiz suffered liver damage. Ortiz's father, Leo Ortiz said: "Doctors say that David is out of danger, thank God. What they have told me post-op is that the doctors believe he will recover quickly. Big Papi will be around for a long time.''

Authorities say Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time Sunday at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo. The gunman was identified as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25, according to the police spokesman Colonel Frank Duran Mejia.
